Pricing a Full Year of Your Prescriptions

A drug plan with a tiny premium can still be the costly choice. If it parks your cholesterol pill on an upper tier or treats your local drugstore as out of network, the savings on the premium disappear by spring.

So the comparison begins with what is in your medicine cabinet. We type in every prescription and dose, select the pharmacy you really use and total the twelve-month cost under each drug plan we can offer.

What Shapes Your Annual Drug Bill

Plans group their covered drugs into tiers. Generic drugs typically sit low with modest copays, and brand and specialty medicines climb higher. Some plans also apply a deductible before copays kick in.

For 2026, your share of covered drug costs ends at $2,100. After you reach it, covered prescriptions cost $0 for the rest of the calendar year. Insulin that a plan covers is limited to $35 a month, and no deductible applies to it.

  • Does the formulary include each of your medicines, and on which tier?
  • Will any need prior authorization or step therapy first?
  • Is your drugstore preferred, standard or outside the network?
  • Could a 90-day supply by mail lower the total?

Smoothing Out the Payments

Under the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, you can spread out-of-pocket drug costs into monthly bills rather than paying large sums at the pharmacy in January or February. The total for the year does not change, but on a fixed income the steadier payments can help. We talk through whether opting in fits your situation.

Steering Clear of the Late Penalty

Once eligible, if you go longer than 62 days in a row without Part D or other creditable drug coverage, a penalty is added to your drug premium for as long as you have it. Many union and retiree plans qualify as creditable, and we can help you find the letter that confirms it.

On a limited income? Extra Help and New Jersey's PAAD program can cut drug costs dramatically, and we build them into each comparison.

Switching Plans

Drug plans can be changed every year from October 15 through December 7. Before that window, check the Annual Notice of Change for new tiers or pharmacy rules, or go through it with us during an annual review.

Part D: What Shore Residents Ask

My doctor added a new medicine mid-year. Can I switch plans?

Usually that alone does not allow a mid-year switch, but you can ask the plan for a coverage or tier exception, and we can explain the process.

Should I get drugs through Part C or a separate plan?

That depends on whether you stay with Original Medicare. Our Medicare Advantage page lays out that decision.

Is my drugstore on Atlantic Avenue in network?

We look up your exact store in each plan's pharmacy directory before suggesting a plan.

Figures reflect 2026 Medicare rules and were last checked October 30, 2026.
