Medicare and NJ FamilyCare, Working as One

A good number of Atlantic City residents qualify for Medicare through age or disability and for NJ FamilyCare through income. Having both programs can save a great deal, yet managing them can mean several cards, two sets of rules and lots of calls.

Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans, or D-SNPs, are Part C plans built to combine those benefits so your care runs through one system.

How These Plans Function

Medicare stays your primary coverage, and NJ FamilyCare pays much of the rest, including premiums and copays, depending on your eligibility level. The D-SNP ties them together and typically gives you a coordinator who helps arrange visits, prescriptions and in-home services.

  • Medical, hospital and drug benefits under a single plan
  • Very low or $0 copays for many members with full Medicaid
  • Bonus benefits on many plans, like dental work, eyeglasses, hearing care or a card for drugstore basics
  • A care team to help with ongoing health conditions

Fully Integrated Options in New Jersey

New Jersey has fully integrated plans in which one company manages both your Medicare and Medicaid benefits, including the long-term services some people need to stay in their own homes. We explain what is available in Atlantic County and what each plan includes.

Confirming Your Providers and Drugs

D-SNPs rely on networks, just like other Part C plans. Before you switch, we make sure your primary doctor, specialists and pharmacy are included and that each of your prescriptions is on the formulary.

Changing Plans

Dual eligibles get added chances to change plans during the year, outside the fall enrollment season. We go over those rules before you act. Not yet enrolled in NJ FamilyCare? Our page on help paying for Medicare describes programs that may apply.

D-SNPs: What Shore Residents Ask

Does joining a D-SNP end my NJ FamilyCare?

No. You need to keep your Medicaid eligibility to remain in the plan, so returning renewal paperwork on time is essential.

Can my son help manage my plan?

Yes. With your consent he can be on calls and speak with your care coordinator.

Will a D-SNP cover me while visiting family in Pennsylvania?

Emergency care is covered anywhere in the country. Routine care depends on the plan's network, which we review with you.
