Paying for Teeth, Eyes and Ears After 65

Routine dental, vision and hearing care gets very little help from Original Medicare. Cleanings, fillings, eyeglasses and hearing aids mostly come out of your pocket, and the need for them tends to grow over time.

There are several ways to reduce those costs, and we compare them side by side with you before you pick one.

What Original Medicare Covers

  • Some dental services linked to covered medical care, for example certain treatment before heart surgery
  • A yearly diabetic eye exam, plus glaucoma screening for higher-risk people
  • A single set of eyewear following cataract removal when a lens implant is placed
  • Hearing and balance tests a doctor orders for medical reasons

Cleanings, dentures, routine eye exams and hearing aids are not covered.

Extras in Medicare Advantage

Many Part C plans build in dental, vision and hearing benefits. They range from generous to bare-bones, so we read the specifics: yearly dollar caps, preventive versus major services, waiting periods and whether your dentist participates.

Separate Policies

If you stay with Original Medicare, a stand-alone dental or vision plan can fill in. We compare the premium, the waiting period for bigger work and the annual maximum to judge whether it is likely to pay off.

Over-the-counter hearing aids, sold without a prescription to adults with mild to moderate hearing loss, have also lowered the cost of better hearing for many people.

Before You Choose, Ask

  • Does the network include your dentist or eye doctor?
  • What is the annual cap, and does unused money carry over?
  • Are dentures or implants covered, and after what waiting time?
  • How often are new glasses or hearing aids allowed?
