Is a Supplement the Right Partner for Original Medicare?

With Original Medicare you can book with nearly any doctor or hospital in the country that participates in Medicare, from an office on Atlantic Avenue to a specialist in Philadelphia. There are no network maps and no referrals to chase. The catch is that it has no annual ceiling on what you owe, and it pays only part of most bills.

A Medigap policy, sold by private insurers, sits beside Original Medicare and takes on much of the remaining cost. You pay a monthly premium, and depending on the plan letter, the policy pays some or almost all of the deductibles and coinsurance that Parts A and B pass along to you.

For shore residents we answer two things in sequence. First, do you prefer a predictable monthly charge over paying as you go? If so, which letter and which carrier give you the most for the money?

The Costs a Supplement Absorbs

Imagine a few nights at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center after a fall on icy steps. Part A starts by charging its $1,736 benefit-period deductible for 2026. Follow-up visits, scans and therapy fall under Part B, which carries a $283 deductible for the year and then usually leaves you a fifth of every approved charge.

That fifth has no annual limit. Chemotherapy, cardiac care or regular dialysis can push the yearly total well beyond what a retirement budget expects. A supplement replaces that open-ended risk with a known premium.

  • Part A's deductible and coinsurance on extended hospital stays
  • Part B's 20 percent coinsurance on approved services
  • Coinsurance for a skilled nursing facility on most letters
  • Foreign travel emergency care on several letters, useful if you winter abroad with relatives

Comparing Plan G and Plan N

Federal law standardizes what each letter pays, so Plan G from one insurer matches Plan G from any other. The premium and the company's service are what differ, which makes carrier shopping worthwhile.

Most new enrollees look first at Plan G. Once the annual Part B deductible is met, it covers nearly every remaining approved amount. Plan N usually has a lower premium, in exchange for copays of up to $20 on some office visits and up to $50 for an emergency room trip that does not end in admission.

People who became eligible for Medicare in 2020 or later cannot buy Plan C or Plan F, the letters that covered the Part B deductible. If you already own one, keeping it can still make sense, and we can price it against current choices.

When to Buy

The strongest time to apply is your six-month Medigap open enrollment period, which opens when you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During those six months a company must accept you for any plan it sells, whatever your health.

After that period ends, insurers can ask health questions and turn down an application. Thinking of leaving a Medicare Advantage plan you have had for years? We confirm a supplement is actually available to you before you drop anything.

Pair It With Drug Coverage

Medigap plans sold today do not include prescriptions, so most people add a stand-alone drug plan. Our Part D page explains how we price one around your own medicines.

Medigap: What Shore Residents Ask

Will a supplement work at hospitals in Philadelphia or Cape May County?

Yes. Medigap follows Original Medicare, so any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare can bill it, including out-of-state hospitals.

Could my supplement premium go up over time?

It can. Companies price policies in different ways, and some raise rates as you age. We explain the pricing method of every carrier we represent.

Can I keep Medigap if I join a Part C plan?

No. A supplement only works with Original Medicare and cannot be used by Medicare Advantage members.

Figures reflect 2026 Medicare rules and were last checked October 30, 2026.
