Parts A and B: Where Every Choice Starts
Every Medicare decision you make rests on Parts A and B. The federal government runs them, most providers across the nation accept them, and they are where nearly everyone begins at 65.
Their gaps deserve equal attention. Many new members are caught off guard by what Original Medicare leaves unpaid, and how you cover those gaps affects your budget for years to come.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
Part A at a Glance
Part A pays for inpatient hospital care, a short stay in a skilled nursing facility after at least three inpatient days, hospice and certain home health care. Most people owe no premium for it because they or a spouse paid Medicare taxes for about ten years of work.
You pay when you use it. In 2026 the deductible is $1,736 at the start of each benefit period, and long stays bring daily coinsurance. A benefit period closes once you have spent 60 straight days outside a hospital or skilled nursing facility.
Part B at a Glance
Part B pays toward doctor appointments, outpatient procedures, blood work, X-rays and scans, medical equipment like walkers and canes, and a long list of preventive services, including a free yearly wellness visit.
The standard premium for 2026 is $202.90 a month, usually deducted from Social Security, with higher-income members paying more. Once you meet the $283 annual deductible, you typically pay 20 percent of each Medicare-approved amount.
Gaps in Original Medicare
- Most medicines you fill at a pharmacy
- Routine dental care, eye exams for glasses and hearing aids
- Custodial care in a nursing home
- Medical care outside the U.S., apart from a few exceptions
There are two common ways to fill them. One pairs a Medigap policy with a drug plan; the other replaces both with a Medicare Advantage plan.
Why Assignment Matters
A doctor who accepts assignment takes Medicare's approved amount as full payment. One who does not may bill up to 15 percent more. Asking the office before a scheduled procedure can save you money.

Is it okay to have only Parts A and B?
It is allowed, but your 20 percent share would have no yearly cap, you would have no drug coverage, and adding Part D later could bring a penalty.
I still work in the casino industry. Do I need Part B right away?
Maybe not. Coverage from a current employer with 20 or more employees may let you wait without a penalty. We review your specific plan with you.
How do I enroll?
Through Social Security, online at ssa.gov, by phone or in person at an office.
